Fifth District Green Party Planning: Values
The following values were created by small groups in November, 2003, synthesizing the results of the October, 2003 values brainstorming session. These values were posted for written comments during breaks. Comments are transcribed after each value.
These will be used as “working values” for December goal-setting session. They will be open to comment and will be discussed, finalized, and formally adopted at a later membership meeting (early 2004?). They are part of the Fifth Congressional District Green Party strategic planning process and are intended to last (potentially with changes/adjustments) while this plan is in effect.
Practical Idealism
Effectiveness as a political party requires that we balance the idea that small is beautiful with the desire to grow in an organized, efficient, and pragmatic way. Neither approach is more green than the other; discussion between grassroots idealism and pragmatism is healthy.

Strategies for being
We believe that human connections are powerful experiences when based on respect, authenticity, and creativity. Our ways of being are an organic process that honors our humanity, leading us toward communities of humor, non-violence, and honesty.
Comments:
- What is an “organic process?” Isn’t it just a feel-good word? Organic good, nonorganic bad?
Inclusivity and diversity
We believe in reaching out and engaging people regardless of race, philosophy, sexual orientation, shade of green, nationality, and ethnic identity in pursuit of our common goals.
Comments:
- Add disabilities.
Inter-green relationships
We believe that cooperation is a value for all of our work, especially within the green movement at large. Cooperation is finding allies and working together in the process of promoting our ten key values to promote the green vision. We are about transforming our communities through the transformation of the electoral process. We believe this is possible only through cooperation at all levels within the Green Party as well as with groups external to the Green Party.
Comments:
- Rename this value “Cooperation”?
Compassionate and sustainable
We believe that the work we do must be compassionate towards all sentient beings and the natural world, and that this work must be ecologically and economically sustainable.
